Resilience, positive emotions, and a sense of purpose are just a few key factors in helping a child to be mentally healthy.
WILL School of Antipolo, Inc. (WSAI) stepped up for parents to help improve their child’s mental health at the Parents’ Education Program (PEP) on July 6.
Michael Jimenez, LPT, RN, MBA, RPsy, a licensed psychologist, lectured for the event.
Jimenez emphasized the importance of positive emotions such as joy, pride, serenity, and gratitude in keeping a child’s mental well-being. He also gave the parents ways on how to train their children to be resilient. This, to help them better prepare for future frustrations and problem-solving.
“Kailangan matutunan ng bata yung maghintay. Kasi yan yung wala sa kanila ngayon. Ang mga bata ngayon mabilis ang takbo ng isip dahil sa gadgets,” he quoted on one of his statements.
“Sayo magsisimula ang pagbabago,” Jimenez calls to the parents.
This PEP was only the first of four sessions, with one each quarter.
“Every session with Sir Mike is awesome. It’s awesome because, first, it’s free for us and not all schools have this opportunity to listen to him. Secondly, we realized a lot of things,” May Advincula, one of the parent attendees said in the event.
“This is just a realization that we need to start changing ourselves for the kids. Because of course, we are waking up, we’re working for them, (and) so we need to improve in order for them to improve. That is what I learned today. And I hope that I can also manifest starting tomorrow,” she added.
As modern-day mental health in children statistics would show a higher percentage of depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders as kids age. The PEP intended to enhance the role of the family in mental health, especially of parents.
The rest of the session was split into different talks and demonstrations.
Discussions also included the Students’ Code of Discipline, K-12 orientation, financial literacy talk by Robinsons Bank, and an introduction to online programs for students, KooBits, and MathScore.
Other activities were an exhibition by the Taekwondo players, the introduction of the faculty members and staff, and a brief awarding for the faculty members.
