Where it starts, develops, and how to stop it

Bullying—We were all taught in primary school that bullying is wrong and those who bully are bad people. A lot of us might have experienced this or are experiencing being bullied. It hurts and it affects us in a multitude of negative ways. But have you ever wondered why these people act the way they do?

According to many news articles online and other publications, children often turn into bullies as a byproduct of a toxic relationship with their parents at home. It could be from lack of attention or it could just be a mirror of what happens at home.

Bullies usually lash out on others as an outlet, similar to self-harm. People self-harm because they want to physically hurt themselves. They do it to feel more in control, the same applies to the act of bullying.

Bullying was never just a result of the person being born bad. It’s more of a defense mechanism to make them feel validated.

When asked why they hurt others, a lot of them replied: [according to www.stompoutbullying.org]

  • It makes them feel smarter than the person
  • These acts are what they see or how they get treated at home
  • It’s because they’re jealous
  • They are afraid that they might get bullied too

What should we do in this case?

A lot of people who are bullied usually keep it to themselves and are afraid to tell adults with the fear of getting bullied further. But that should not be the case.

If you or anyone you know is being bullied, do not hesitate to tell someone who can do something about it.

If you yourself realized that you are a bully, please reflect on your actions and seek help if needed. Remember that even if this pleases your feelings, it is not good nor is it healthy for you to be taking it out on others. And know that this too shall pass.

Always bear in mind Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future.”
